Not very likely "ground wave" but tropospheric ducting along the virtual
waveguide frequently produced along the boundaries of a temperature
inversion, i.e., warmer air above colder air. Ham stations around S.F.
and L.A. California have worked into Hawaii on transmit power of 1 kW
with antenna gains of 10 - 20 dB.

An interesting story about the Jerk 27 thought the list might like. While
stationed at the
Fortuna AF Station GATR site we used to use a GRC-27 to drive the spare
channel of the
FRT-49 data link transmitter. As the FRT-49 runs about 22KW it sure would
overcome most
of the ECM used by SAC on exercises. Everything was all OK until the Navy
started to
complain that we were wiping out the bombing range communications off the
Washington State
coast. We never realized that UHF would carry about 1200 mile ground wave.
But think
about it, 22KW at 290Mc into a high gain slot antenna and an ERP close to a
megawatt.
