Ed and group,
Sure it's portable, that's why the design team put two handles on the
front panel! The modulator, MD-129, is the heaviest box and weighs in at
about 215 pounds IIRC. Loads of fun carrying down a flight of stairs!
True story follows:
Bob Decker and Jack Beaver, two fellow Ground Radio Techs stationed with
me in Germany, were on standby one weekend and were called to the Command
Center about a problem with the GRC-27. No transmit from the remote
console. After a few checks on the transmitter, they discovered there
was no modulation. So they went back to the shop for the spare MD-129.
After lugging the spare down a long, long flight of stairs and swapping
out the modulator, they got the UHF back on line. After carrying the
defective modulator back up those stairs and back to the shop, they
discovered the remote/local toggle switch on the MD-129 was in local.
Killed a couple of hours on an otherwise quite Saturday night!
Regards,
Jim
