[Milsurplus] ART-13B Questions

I just bought an ART-13B transmitter, with a crystal oscillator, and some
things about it are perplexing.

1. Selecting crystal freqencies: There are 17 crystals (and space for 20),
and the same 17 frequencies are written on the tuning chart, together with the
appropriate settings for controls A-E. But the crystal unit seems to be able
to select only 8 frequencies. There's a toggle switch marked A/B and a
rotary switch marked 1-4. So how does the user select among the 17 (or 20) crystal
frequencies? Could it be that a given switch combination (like A-3) selects
several crystals at once, but the settings of knobs A-E support oscillation on
only one of those channels?

2. Low Frequency Extended Range: There's a toggle switch at the bottom
center of the front panel and a plate next to it marked "Low Frequency Extended
Range." The 2 settings of the toggle switch are marked "Normal" and "Extended
range." I haven't seen this in any of the ART-13 manuals.

Does anyone know what it covers?

Also, I'm surprised to see any reference on this radio to "low
frequency," because the crystal unit occupies the space that is usually reserved for
the low-frequency oscillator. Anyone know the explanation?

3. Carbon/Dynamic Mike: The carbon/dynamic mike switch has been fixed
permanently in the carbon position, by means of a small hole drilled through the
switch handle and a bit of wire tying the switch into the carbon position. Does
this mean mods have been made to the audio amplifier unit so it would be
incompatible with a dynamic mike? Or can I just unhook the switch and use it as
it was originally meant to be used?

Any info appreciated. And I would be very interested in any manuals or
articles that describe the ART-13B modifications.

Many thanks.
