I had not thought of the line-of-sight problem. That makes sense.

For the early set, I could see the big advantage. I don't see it for the 
AN/ARC-27, where programming a frequency is pretty darn easy. Then again, 
I suppose having more preset channels on an AN/ARC-27 was pretty cheap 
anyway, so why not...
