It ain't only the old manuals that are full of mistakes. I work in an Air Force
PMEL calibrating test equipment, and we probably have to make corrections to
about 10% or so of new-issue T.O.s, especially those in the RF and Microwave
area. There is one model of Tektronix spectrum analyzer than has had a half
dozen corrections turned in on it's procedure and the two still don't match.
( too early in the morning to remember the model number.... )

I think the technical writing business is getting worse with time instead of
better.
