Brooke:
This subject has been thrashed out endlessly on the antique radios
newsgroup. The consensus is: Use Caig products. Their Deoxit D5 is the
most useful general cleaner, and then Pro Gold for treatment after
cleaning. The D5 cleans, the Pro Gold leaves a film which enhances
contact continuity. If you have only limited use, then the spray cans
are relatively expensive, but easy to use. If you do a lot of old
switches and controls, then get the larger bottles, which provide a lot
more product per dollar.
Remember, though, that there are all kinds of metals used in these
radios, and all kinds of chemical exposure, so some contacts may require
a real effort to clean. Some of the corrosion products don't seem to
want to yield to anything short of hydrochloric acid. Then, they usually
need replating, so that is a dead end approach.
