Seems to me that I remember an article in 73 magazine many years
ago that described how to repair a Bird element. It might also have
been in CQ, QST, or Ham Radio. Good luck on searching the archives!

Subject: [Milsurplus] Modifying Bird wattmeter elements.
Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2003 17:27:25 -0500

Does anyone know if its possible or has ever been attempted to open up a
Bird watt meter element with an eye to replacing a diode or modifying to a
different frequency band?

I have a pair of elements that are on rather esoteric bands and of little
use to a Ham and am wondering if they could be modified to be useful.
