Cletus, this WAS used in WW2. I have an article from
ELECTRONICS magazine, i think its called "Army 
Ground Radio" or something similar, that has a photo
of some GI in Italy sitting before a TRC-1. I am pretty
sure this photo is seen elsewhere, maybe even in the
Signal Corps WW2 history series.  The article says 
these sets were called "Tracks".
