Back in about 1954+/-, the FCC upgraded equipment and some of their old
sets found their way to the Texas State Guard. One of my Elmers was then
the Chief of Communications for TSG, and he showed me one of the receiver
racks which had an SX-28 on the bottom, an S-27 in the middle, and an
S-37 on top. I remember being impressed by a set of equipment which
tuned continuously from half a Mc. to over 200 Mcs. in one place. All in
an open 3 foot Bud rack. I don't recall seeing a speaker with it, and
all 3 receivers had the -FCC designation after the model number. I never
knew how many of these the Guard received, or what ever happened to them.
I have a 3' Bud rack which I got from the same ham at a later date, but
I have no idea whether I can claim provenance for it or not. In
retrospect, I wonder what the FCC used below 550 Kcs.? Did any
Hallicrafters tune down there, or was that left to RCA, National and the
others?
