These were main pieces in SCS-1, SCS-2, etc. fighter communications n/w
Each fighter base had some & they were all linked together via
TRC-1 carrier telephone systems.
Wow, in 1945! Networked two-ways!!
Delta used 639 rxs & 640 TXs all over 'system' fm 1949-1958 give or take.
According to W4KMR (sk) the '640s ate 24Gs like peanuts.
They replaced the "airways notion" HF network using Wilcox 450TH rigs
in many places.
The BC638 & 9 had 110V power supplies but the BC-640 ran off 208
3-phase delivered by a PE-99 (see TMS-486). Not that there was
so much power demand, but a change was req'd to get these into
normal civvy svc.
And this seemed too much for me in 1988 or so & the tax dedeuction
to Warner Robbins looked best. So off my SCS-2 went.
BTW, this SCS-2 came hacked-complete out of Dobbins AFB in Marietta, GA next
to Bell B29 plant - later Lockheed. I say hacked-complete since it was
on 3 spot-bid pallets and, amazingly, all there.
Did a SCS-x collector stand up??
