Leigh and the group,
I suspect that this is an acoustic sonar buoy. The detachable weight on the
bottom is probably used to rapidly take the transducer to the depth set by
the length of cable connecting it to the buoy. There is probably a short
length of silicon (?) runner with part of the transducer wire wound around
it. This acts as a shock absorber. The weight ensures that the transducer
deploys on impact with the water. Do you see any small transducers attached
to the wire? There is probably an antenna on the top made of springy metal
and a device near the base that will allow two knockout plugs to be
release. This is to allow saltwater into the saltwater activated battery.
Is the diameter about 5 inches?
