The PL-54 variants are for the quick disconnect earphone pigtails, while 
the PL-55 is for normal equipment jacks.  However, a picture's worth a

The confusion reigns supreme here, though - the Navy had their own 
system, and as you can see, the Signal Corps seems to have experimented 
with several different ways of labeling these same plugs.  :-(
