[Milsurplus] Broken shafts (was BC-779 questions...reformatted..).

The receivers under consideration here have, by now, spent a long time in
rather rough environments, both during their military "careers" and later bumping
around in warehouses, flea markets, basements, garages, etc. A phenolic
shaft just won't survive a hit like a metal one will which may be the reason so
many turn up broken now days. I've also run across several cases with
BC-312/342 receivers where the phenolic shaft apparently swelled and seized
up in the front panel bushing and I imagine these frequently got wrung off by
heavy handed operators. In regard to rough handling it's interesting to note
that all the later 312/342s had stop pegs on the front panel to prevent the
bandswitch from being forced beyond it limits and a slip clutch on the main
tuning knob to protect the gears. Earlier models didn't include these features.
