Yup, that's correct regarding the purpose of the dual R-808's in the MRC-55
system. The weight of the system probably pushes the rear springs of the
poor Jeep down to the axle!
Someone connected me to a guy a few months ago who has the full GRC-14
system, cables, accessories, the whole nine yards, ready for operation. As
far as I understood initially, it was up for sale. I'm a glutton for
punishment so of course I was interested... When I spoke to the guy, he told
me that he only wanted to trade it - for high-end vintage tube hi-fi
amplifiers, which don't interest me at all and I'm not familiar with them.
Looks like I'm not going to own that thing for quite a while, unless I find
another one available...
BTW I never had any contact problems between the modules and the main
chassis in any R-808 I owned (I had 2 at different times besides the one I
kept), but it's possible that in actual vehicular use the connectors get
loose.

I have an R808 too. Dave Stinson said they failed because of mechanical
instability of the modules mating to the set. The GRC-14/MRC-55 must have
been one honkin' load for the poor Jeep! I've never seen anything written on
the intended use but think they would have a TTY link with the afloat
element and one RX to copy Navy Broadcast. Al Tipsword W6GER brought one of
the sets to the West Coast MRCG meet a few years.
