Barry,

It probably has something to do with the fact that the 1R5 
converter is preceeded by two RF amps and followed by two 
IF's.  I.e., the gain structure of the two radios is 
entirely different.  The TO is betting on the significant 
conversion gain of the 1L6 at the higher frequencies.

BTW, the other major user of 1L6's is the RS-1/GRC-109 
receivers.  Is this the only reason that NOS 1l6's are 
available at all?
