Hi Marty & list:
Someone sent me a copy of a magazine article that said it the R-174 (plus
P/S & case) -- the AN/GRR-5, AKA "Angry Five" that WAS the "gas radio". Not
a sideways remark about the quality of its tubes, but called that because
one of it's primary "missions" was to serve as GC rx that would be kept
tuned to certain MW or HF frequencies to receive early broadcast warnings of
gas or maybe even CBR attacks. It has a mult-voltage power supply that will
run 6/12/24 vdc plus 115 AC, etc. and those detents which are adjustable
with the little wrench on a chain. But, as I recall from the article, that
purpose never really materialized for one reason or another and they were
used primarily as general purpose and even morale/entertainment receivers.
Manufacturers included Emerson, Colonial, and Magnavox, as I recall from
tags I've seen.
Do you mean there was another one? What about the R-100? I thought that
was purely intended as a morale rx, though, as I recall, it has the two CD
markings on the AM BC dial. Those were made primarily by Hallicrafters, I
think.
Then there's that Crosley/Cincinnati made radio, but they're gray and made
for the Navy.
R-390 started at Hallicrafters? Thought that was purely Collins technology.
The first (not A) versions were made there and at Motorola. Hallicrafters
never even turned up as one of the dozen or so manufacturers of the R-390A.
So, Marty -- are you saying there was another "gas radio".
Barry
