Yes!. They were jumping 28 ft round C-9 rip-stop nylon high porosity
canopies. I can tell you from my early days of sport jumping (1968) those boatanchor
C-9 canopies put you down pretty fast even without carrying any extra gear.
The most radio gear I have taken along on a jump is an FRS HT.
I was never able to do a standup landing under those boatanchor 28 ft
canopies. Every landing hurt. The 35 ft T 10s were a lot better, but I could only
afford the dirt cheap C-9 28 footers. The article says they were jumping at
midnight to harass the 27th Combat Engineers. I have a friend who was a Ranger who
made a similar HALO night harassment jump into an area that was supposed to
be very secure. He and his fellow Rangers rolled a couple of trucks into a
lake, left notes on other equipment saying this has been destroyed, and exited
undetected. They got into quite a bit of trouble for taking things that far.
