I turned up a copy of TM 11-227 dated 10 Apl., 1944 which says: 

 SCR-543
 Medium Power Mobile Command Set.  Capable of operation in a moving
vehicle.
Further says: 

USE:  CAC, Firing Battery, Barrage Baloon (sic) units, & AA Units.

RANGE: (Miles) 15 moving, 20 - 50 stationary.

TRANSPORTATION: Vehicle (Can be dismounted quickly and operated with
increased range as field station)
