As an old AACS man I can tell you that the
"Lady Be Good" was not at fault.  The DF station
at the field was running the SCR-575 or similiar,
and the operator continued to give the same "TO"
heading long after the airplane passed over the
field. He didn't pull down on the sense antenna
and recheck the direction, he just continued with
the null he had.  That's part of the AACS history.
That history also includes hundreds of "saves".  The
URD-2 we used in Korea and other places had a good
indication of station passage whether you wanted it
or not. URD-2's were Navy and Navy grey, but USAF
had one in about every tower everywhere.
