Thales is a French company (and I won't editorialize here).
The MBITR is from Racal Communications based in FL. The company
was bought by Thales a year or so ago.
Its encryption is what's known as Controlled Cryptographic Item (CCI)
Type 1. This means that John or Jane Q. Citizen can't buy it with the
embedded encryption system.
Check it out at: http://www2.thalescomminc.com/details.asp?item_id=1&extraDetails=1
It's a truly amazing radio and will set you back anywhere from
$5K to $8K, depending on the version you buy.
Unfortunately, I'm not at liberty to get into its crypto capabilities, but
they're impressive and current.

COMSEC/TEMPEST engineer.
