Forgot to mention that CS-81's (which were all made from radio cases BTW)
were apparently never painted. I have or have had CS-81's made on orders
from about 1942 through 1953 and all have been bare. So if your case is
painted, it was hacked. However, if they did it properly (per the
instructions in the 1945 TM) you can make a CS-81 out of it that only a
purist could tell wasn't original (on the originals, the holes for the mic &
earphone ground leads and for the Channel ID/Battery History card bezel are
not drilled/tapped). Early CS-81's (before the BC-611-F came out) had
nameplates so those holes are there.

I will have to look at the insides more thoroughly but as I remember it was
also hacked some inside and modified... but you do bring up a point of some
of these units with holes being a legitimate part of military history!
