While in USAF I was schooled on AN/TRC-1,
(called "Ann Track"),in Germany in 1946. Also
installed them in Korea K2 Taegu in 1951,
and Eielson AFB Alaska in 1956. That's all
we had then, and Army was no better.
The AN/TRC-1 used the Western Electric CF-1
4-channel voice carrier system, connected via
"spirial four" loaded cable. One channel could
be used with a CF-2 4-channel teletype unit.
(The baseband ran from 200 Hz up to over 12 KHz.
CF-1 was a filter type single sideband machine.)
Never saw an amplifier. Transmitter ran hot
and would melt transformer without a bigger fan.
Have pictures from Korea, letters from Alaska,
and a surviving witness from Berlin.
When Germany began to get moving after WWII, the
USAF Radio Relay Squadrons in Europe began using
more modern VHF equipment made by Siemans-Halske.
