I think the reason some people get upset with ebay is that it allows a
much higher number of people to see a seller's obscure but interesting
item, and therefore, allows others outside of a small group or 'posse'
to try to buy it. (I use 'posse' because that's the nickname for the
Dallas Fort Worth Collins Collectors Association (no affiliation and
this has nothing to do with them))
This 'invades' some people's virtual territory, and puts them at less
of an advantage when they want the item.
It allows far away strangers outside the immediate posse, with lots of
money and no idea of, or concern for, what the immediate posse
considers a reasonable price, to go ahead and get the item for as much
as they are willing to pay.
This is without regard to how much money the members of the immediate
posse may have, but it is with regard to what those members think that
they themselves should have the item for.
The other side of the coin is the seller's benefit. If someone were to
decide to sell their mint GRC-106A, should they have to shop it around
the immediate posse and take $400 for it when exposing it to a far
away and strange posse can get them $900 for it?
Things are always worth what the buyer is willing to pay, but only if
the seller agrees.
Well, enough discussion of the posse for now.
