The BC-944 is a receiver control box for the early VHF version of
SCR-274N.
It looks like the standard BC-450, except the right-most "coffee
grinder"
is replaced by the channalized controls for the VHF receiver.
The receiver, BC-942, is identical to the first version of the
R-28/ARC-5.
The transmitter is BC-950, which looks just like
the T-23/ARC-5 except that it has an on-board 815 P-P plate modulator.
Best information so far indicates between 1000 and 1500 of these
sets were made, making it an uncommon set.
The Army did not choose to procure them, but the
Navy adopted them (with some modifications) as a part of
AN/ARC-5, where they saw long service.
