I forgot to add the reason for the downing of the F-104 was not due to
the projectiles it was the belt links that were ingested into the engine
air intakes. Which caused a immediate engine failure at Mach 1.6 and
Fish pulled the handle and was ejected out of the bottom of the A/C. He
landed on So Base at Edward's by the rocket sled facility. All of it is
on film.

The Navy lost a F-14 by flying into its on projectiles out of the
Bethpage  factory strip out over Long Island sound during early flight
testing.
