Joe:
Two differences come immediately to mind. A true CRT has both horizontal
and vertical deflection, so complex patterns can be generated. The eye
tube was an easy amplitude indicator. Back then, cheaper than meters.
Now, you can buy a digital multimeter cheaper than a NOS replacement eye
tube. How's that for progress?
A minor one: the eye tube has the phosphor on a metal target which is
viewed through clear glass. The CRT applies phosphor to the glass and
fires electrons into it from the back.
But, I suppose since CRT is the abbreviation for cathode ray tube, and
both use electrons "fired" frpm a cathode, they qualify.
