I think you have something wrong with the final. I think the tube is
using the extra current but something is not working with regards to
the RF circuit. It runs class C so you probably have drive to it, but
something wrong with the output. There are various filters and
automatic tuning arrangements, if one of these is messed up, it might
do as you describe. If the power supply inverter was fried, the
symptom would be worse such as blowing fuses etc. The tube is hardly
ever bad.

I may not have been clear enough in my first post;
the "HI" position draws heavier current, but not
as much as I'd expect from shot inverter transistors.
Just "heavier" as in what I'd expect from going to a
higher output power.
It keys up fine, the blower runs etc. Just no output.
In other rigs I've serviced, shorted inverter transistors
would have blown the circuit breaker on the supply.
Will this rig still key without fuse-blowing
and behave this way if the inverter transistors are gone?
