The RT-524 schematics are voluminous, best to try for the whole 4"
thick manual including troubleshooting procedures. The manuals with
the schematics of all the modules are difficult to obtain for
reasonable prices and are also still restricted from download from the
gummint site. The units are also challenging to repair, more so than
the HF set AN/GRC-106, due to being more densely compaced inside with
the modules, you can't get to everything you might need to test easily
without spare modules to swap etc. You may spend 5-10 hours
troubleshooting unless the trouble is obvious or you work on them all
the time, and many of the alignments are ambiguous or tricky and
require special equipment to do properly.
Unless you really really want to do it yourself, I wholeheartedly
reccommend seeing if Steve Haney will work on it for you. When he is
done you can be assured of a radio that performs to specification and
he is reasonable as well. Steve has serviced my RT-246 (a RT524 with
automatic presettable tuning) as well as several other milrads, and I
am completely satisfied with his work.
I forget the model number of exact handset, but I think the H-250 is I
think one that will work, and the other is an H-350 perhaps. He's got
them reasonable as well as other accessories too. You can also get an
M-80 MIC since the RT524 has a speaker. The plug on the MIC or hanset
is a U-229. The headphones I beleive is the H-140 or H-251. I am not
sure if it will work with the RT524, but the H-161E Headset seems to
work with the PRC-77, and uses two plugs, one for MIC and one for
headphones and has aPTT switch which hangs on a lanyard around your
neck, at chest level. dont' quote me on thet though.

Subject: [Milsurplus] RT-524 Trans Schemo?
I know- I'm out of my time zone,
but I have an RT-524 that receives very well,
but does not transmit. Pulls extra current
when set on "HI," but nada out.
Anyone got some diagrams on this Cold War honey?
Also- what handset does this use, please?
Thanks.
