[Milsurplus] More TCS questions

Have the TCS transmitter up and running with a new power supply, have
used the radio on 160, 80 and 40 meters and have a couple questions.
First, what's is the external antenna box used for? in operating the
radio with a 40 meter inverted V the radio loads and operates fine 40
and 80 meters, although I do not see much antenna current on 80 and only
about a half amp on 40. The radio gets out well. If I use the external
antenna tuner for the TCS I can get lots more antenna current but the
signal to the antenna is less, this is according to readings by a field
strength meter, also have noticed the receiver sensitivity drops way
down using the tuner set for maximum current from the transmitter.
My question is was the tuner only intended to be used a base-loading
coil for a short whip? Is it to be bypassed when the radio is used on a
long wire antenna, I found my best results with it bypassed, in the
number six position. Have tried the radio with a short antenna, a 10
meter sloper, the radio will load but with poor performance. Is their
any idea of what type of long wire should be used with the TCS?
Second, the antenna capacitor. There is a capacitor that can be
switched out, in series or parallel with the output of the transmitter,
what is the recommended setting for this capacitor? Have found that I
can get the transmitter to tune both with and without the capacitor
switched in, have found that transmitter works best on 40 with cap in
series, at least into the V, dose anyone have the approved procedures
for tuning the transmitter, other then following the letters.
Third, harmonic suppression. The harmonic suppression on a radio of
this age is good on 40 meters, with second and third harmonic being over
60 db down, 80 is about the same, when using the radio on 160 have
noticed that the second and third harmonic come up to about 30 db below
the carrier. The antenna tuner only appears to make this problem worse.
The 40 meter reading were into a 50 ohm load with a sample from a bird
thru line, but did the rest of the readings just using the 40 meter
antenna. Anyone have any idea what the transmitters output impendence
really is?
