Here's purely a guess:
To provide homing signal transmit. In the same way the MF band was
provided in such transmitters as the GO, GP, ART-13.
Let's say you're out in a Kingfisher with RUGF set onboard. You spot
an oil slick and some survivors in rafts and some in the water. ( I just
was reading a book on USS Indianapolis.) You reel out the trailing
wire antenna, climb altitude, and send on your msg on working channel,
and also say, "Will send long dashes on 1100 kcs." So that other planes,
including larger rescue seaplanes, can home on you.
Just a guess. The GF is not nearly as powerful as those other xmtrs i
listed.
