The dynamic Navy Handsets were the H-169/U and were originally developed in
1959 for use with the emerging SSB equipments to provide a better quality of
audio than the carbon mikes. There was also a field change kit to replace the
carbon elements in the old line 'standard' handsets. The H-169/U was colored
gray to indicate their difference.
