Hi John,

I'm fairly experienced in shipping boatanchor stuff from all over Europe. I
use BAX Global which has stations near all the major airports in the world
and they'll pick up the package on location - although you'll save money if
the package is dropped off at their facility. For further savings, I don't
have them deliver the package to my house and I do my own customs clearance
before I pick up the shipment at their warehouse. The average cost for
shipping (including pickup from the sender) is $1.95 per kilo or roughly a
dollar/pound. The freight comes by air. The heaviest stuff so far was a
Siemens HF transmitter - it weighs just under 300 lbs.

Interestingly, ocean freight for a single small package is not going to save
anything, in fact it'll cost you more. If you can put together one ton's
worth of stuff in a crate or crates, ocean freight is then becomes cost
effective, at $600 per ton. 3 years ago I had shipped about 600 lbs. of
"boatanchor" stuff from Germany - put the shipment together with someone's,
who had about 700 lbs. of stuff so we had two crates totaling 1300 lbs,
which were shipped at the rate of a ton. Too bad I didn't have more stuff to
ship ;-)

Good luck,

73, Meir WF2U

Subject: [armyradios] Trans-Atlantic shipping problem

I'm looking for help on shipping some antenna masts and other stuff from
Germany
to the east coast of the US (Boston). There are two masts are about 7' long
and
2" in diameter and a couple of boxes of bases, guys, etc. The whole lot of
items
would weigh about 200# to 300#, give or take. There is no rush.

Does anybody have any ideas how this might be accomplished without
significantly
increasing the national debt?
