[Milsurplus] USN RBM vs. RBS Questions

I have the RBM setup and it is pretty interesting. The selectivity of the HF
set was so wide that I never made serious use of it.

I am surprised to hear that the schematic is identical to the RBS HF set. I
don't have that set but have had experience with it when in the USN 50+ years
ago.

I was stationed in 3 or the 4 Iowa class battleships during the Korean War
during their tours there as part of Flag Allowance, Commander Seventh Fleet. We
had a couple of RBS receivers in Radio 1 in a compartment to starboard of the
main Radio 1 compartment. Memory doesn't serve me as to which one or more of
the ships had the RBS but I do remember it was not looked on with favor by
any of us (the radio operators) and was not used except for overload when
nothing else was available. I don't remember the engraved knobs but that is most
likely a lapse on my part. The RBM/RBS is a nicely laid out, good looking
receiver and it's a shame it doesn't have better performance.

On board the BB's, we used RBA, RBB & RBC for all LF, MF & HF work and I
remember at the time thinking they were not really "hot" receivers compared to my
general coverage Hallicrafters S-40A at home. But they sure were stable and
the audio output limiter and the selectivity made them very well suited for
copying Fox broadcasts or sitting on a circuit for hours at a time. (And yes,
they were rock solid for RTTY use as well.)
