Marty opined ( if i recall correctly ) that maybe the DZs
weren't used. I just fished out a CQ mag for 3/ 1945,
which has a view inside a PBM,  facing forward.
With the weird acute angle view, it's hard to make out
what the radio gear is, unless you are quite familiar with
it. For example, what is obviously an RAX in front of 
the radio op looks more like the huge Russian Volnya
receiver in this photo. Above and fwd of this is a package
that looks like the DZ, and has the same style handles.
Now, some countermeasures gear had the same package
( "ATR" ) and similar handle style, but countermeasures
wouldn't be up next to the radio op, so i conclude this
radio is DZ.
