Last night I tracked down the problem of low (almost non-
existent) gain: the cathodes of both IF stages which should be 
connected to either the AGC line or to the MGC line were 
floating free.

Some wire in the harness not soldered, I think.

Grounding one of the cathodes directly via lead-de-clip brought 
everything up where it should be.

Nice.

Although these receivers aren't R-390s, they are a lot of fun to 
operate and do a pretty good job of SSB reception, what with 
their BFO-Mixer (product detector) and AGC.
