In the mid/late 60s Navy shore stations used the R-389 to guard 500, and usually
some alternate. At NAW we guarded 480 for an alternate, at NGR we guarded 470.
We had transmitters up on both 500 and the alternates at all times, and for sure
500 was a BUSY freq. Lots of commercial stuff, rare (but not unheard of) to hear
a mil station other than another shore station. The majority of entries in our
logs on 500 were "SP" on 15 and 45, a very occasional SOS, and fairly frequent
XXX or TTT messages broadcast from civilian shore stations.
