Static inverters with 28 VDC input are also pretty common. Look for a black box
with MS connectors. They are often 400 Hz, but some higher frequency ones do
show up. They come in single and 3 phase models. 24 V input are a lot more
common than 12 V. Avionic Instruments is one supplier. If you want one, try
places like Fair, C&H, and other surplus stores. A 500W model should be
available for about $100. Note you will need a beefy DC power supply also.

Static inverters are made by companies like Elgar, Behlman-Invar (?)  and
others.  Some are variable frequency.

WARNING: Be sure you set the frequency correctly before plugging in that
treasured mil-surplus treasure. I accidentally set 40 Hz instead of 400 Hz and
wiped the power transformer in a BC-929A.  :=(((
