Hi Charlie --

I think you may be missing something, indeed. I'm not sure it applies to
all the AR88's, but all three of mine have stamped lettering. No need for
silkscreening -- and it wouldn't work out well anyway.

Look closely to see if what you have there is stamped lettering filled with
white paint. If so, the procedure is to strip the panel with stripper
solution, (use a detailing brush to clean out the stampings completely)
Prep it with phosphate (for steel) or "AlumPrep" for aluminum and prime, or
use a self etching primer. Then apply the finish coats -- probably black
satin. (Go light on the primer and paint so as not to load up the stampings.
Then re-fill the lettering with white laquer stick, acrylic or even
"wite-out". You rub it in then wipe off before it completely dries.
Modified approach is to use gloss black, then refill, and finish with a
clear or satin/matte finish.

Of course, after all that, you're gonna tell me you have a silk-screened
panel.

Incidentally, if your plastic window is bad, a nice repro is available from
that repro dial guy.
