Well, some of those I remember.  G is for ground, F is for fixed, V is
for vehicular, and the obvious A for air and S for shipboard.  So, in
this case, G is appropriate for a radio used on land by Marines, but I
don't recall the M designator, since V was already applied to vehicle
mounted radios.  VRC-19 comes to mind, if you like subminiature tubes by
the bucketfull.  

My decoder ring just turned up and it makes a distinction I had totally
forgotten.  G is Ground fixed, M is Ground mobile, and V is Ground
vehicular.  So now to ferret out how you can be mobile on the ground
without a vehicle?  No, foot soldiers had P for pack or portable.  Maybe
you just slid the radios along the ground?

Seems like I always end up with more questions than answers.
