you can:
A) use a wall wort 20 VAC 2A, rectify it use a LM-317 to regulate and 
a 3055 for the pass transistor, the regulator and pass transistor will
fit inside the battery compartment.
B) order the Eveready batteries direct from the manufacturer.
C) try to get Allied electronics on the phone or internet and order it
The BA-31 is 4.5 V dry cell current is not known, BA-30 is (1) "D" cell.

I have two, one with selection "A" one with selection "C"
I also have the military manual!
