Jack- the BC-224-B looks exactly as later models that have the antenna
compensater in the front panel lower right corner. It also has the "old
style" crystal filter circuit.
BTW, i notice that the manuals describe alignment of the "old style"
filter state that selectivity is set by the neutralizing capacitor, the o=
ne
that balances out the crystal holder capacity. I think this text is somew=
hat
in error - the phasing adjustment sets the selectivity curve shape but th=
e
overall selectivity is more set by the tuned circuit that follows the cry=
stal.
This action is described in the HRO receiver manual, and in fact the sele=
ctivity
control on the HRO varies the tuning of the tuned circuit following the c=
rystal.
I swear i read in some BC-348 manual that the selectivity can be set by
setting the tuning on the identical tuned circuit on the 348, where this
adjustment is set so that the bandpass is 800 Hz. But i sure cannot find
that text now, in either of the 2 manuals i just looked at.
The 224 and 224-A are the ones that "look different", quite a bit differe=
nt,
with the dial escutcheon on the left side, instead of the middle, and the
tuning knob in the top center of the panel. Looks like a real odd duck.
