My first inclination was to chuckle and move on, but I suggest that those
of you really interested in factual information spend some time carefully
reading the latest editions of the various MIL-C- documents ( MIL-C-39012
for type N, for example), which specify the interface dimensions for
connectors, before forming conclusions about what mates with what. I
have had connectors of just about all series which wouldn't mate properly
(SMA seems the exception, so far), and all other kinds of possible
manufacturing defects as well, and I avoid making overall judgments based
on one or two incidents. One giant example was the decade back when the
Japanese had a difficult time with dimensioning UHF series connectors
(translating inches into millimeters, and keeping the tolerances under
control), making both oversize and undersize threads on both males and
females, so they either wouldn't mate, or wouldn't stay mated with
dimensionally correct mates. Visually, they always looked pretty good.
Just didn't work.
