First I had one of those 'tubing loop frame' 300W units as a kid. All
I remember is that engine was made by Jacobsen. Maybe a PE210? 45 yr.s
back & god knows where it went.
Then along comes an episode 10 yr.s back where a pal turns up a similar
gray thing that supposedly was an emergency APU from a B47. 110V @ 400 cps
& mebbe 500W.
Regular big gene for a VHF contest group was blotto & this got volunteered.
Cornerstone VHF mountaintoppers would NOT allow 400cps in their plugs so
GW3NJY & I went off with this crate which, within limits, worked better in
any xfrmr supply than 60 cps stuff.
So comes 1AM & the MFJ memory keyer is calling CQ on 440 w. it's sidetone
bleeting. Off I walk toward the gene to dump/add fuel & I hear CQ sig.
again & the closer I get to the gene, the louder. Thinking legend of
sleepy hollow woodsy enchantment, I just do my dump/add deal & return
non-plussed.
A couple of beers helps with puzzle dismissal, I might note.
But haunt me it does until it dawns that I was hearing lamination chatter
@ the gene (380 cps) & a 2" speaker @ the MFJ (440 hz)
Whew, praise be... no sleepy hollow woodsy enchantment!
