It's too bad that it's been really ham-hacked. The covers on the panel
jacks have been removed (I never understood why hams found that to be am
"improvement"), a couple of extra panel toggle switches have been added
(one marked "sidetone" while the other near the transmitter power cable
can't be seen clearly), at least six (of nine) non-original knobs are
present, the FL-10 is missing, and the receiver battery cover appears to
be missing. No telling what kind of ham "re-engineering" has taken
place inside, and I'll bet the original connectors aren't on the ends of
the power cables any more, judging from the sockets on the home made
power supply. Might be a good parts unit that'll probably sell for big
bucks anyway.

I was lucky enough to obtain my BC-474 nearly complete in N.O.S.
condition. Unfortunately, some misguided fellow had drilled a hole in
the rarest component of the SCR-288, the FL-10, ripped out and replaced
the four capacitors within with modern ones, and spliced a power cable
into the FL-10 through the hole. I removed all the ham-hacked stuff in
the FL-10, and next Dayton I'll try to find some replacement caps
similar to the originals. I'll still have to figure out what to do
about the 3/8 inch hole drilled in the side of the FL-10.

Has anyone ever come across the Morse key RCA type MI-8136-2 that TM
11-250 specifies for this set? I consider myself lucky to have found a
complete original J-44 key and base on eBay a few weeks ago. It was the
last major item I needed for my SCR-178, and I had been looking for one
for years. Maybe the SCR-288 key will show up there sometime.
