Having done some DF development work, I can take a swipe at an answer to
the multiplicity of similar, but not identical systems, based on the tiny
bit of information discussed here. DF systems use phase comparisons in
one way or the other to get bearings, and to make a sense system work for
an unambiguous direction indication. Enter the effects of the platform
on the phase of the signal delivered from the loop terminals vs. the
phase delivered by the sense antenna. By changing bands at a certain,
platform dependent frequency, the sense network configuratuion can be
changed with the band to compensate for the characteristics of a specific
platform. This is all done now on an almost continuous basis with modern
computer based DF systems. But back then, changing sense networks, and
making the change and direction indication pilot proof, was a real
challenge.
Of course, as per my previous post, it might also have resulted from
simple incompetence.
