Now that takes me back! In the 50's I bought one of those from Fair Radio.
When it arrived, it looked like it had been dropped from 20 feet up onto one
corner of the auto-tune box. I took it apart and played the body and fender
shop trick. It was a very interesting device.

If you'd like to see an example of how the AN/ARC-5 radios
were "channelized" for use with the ART-13, there is one
on the Bay at item #1339804128. The tuning cap mechanism is
modified with different gearing which tunes the cap from one
end to the other in a single turn. The attached gear box
is used to set six "auto-tune" positions. It is wired into
the system so that the first six positions of the ART-13
control box selects the corresponding receiver channel.
Selecting higher channels on the ART-13 leaves the receiver
on channel #6.
I have an example of an early attempt at this which brought
in a tuning shaft from the side of the radio. This flexable
shaft looks like it would have had too much "slop" in it.
The tuning box on the example on the Bay would do a much better
job at getting it "right."
