Robert, not in the movie but certainly done during the invasions was where 
the relaying was done by one of the three types of radio jeeps used by the 
USMC and Navy. 

I asked the question before on what the jeeps were used for and this must be 
an application. 

MAH used the RT-19/ARC-4 from 140-144 MHz AM
MZ-1 used the TCS 1.5-12 MHz AM
MZ-2 used either the TCS or the SCR-608 which was at 27-39 MHz FM

I have photos of backpack radios like the SCR-536/BC-1000 or TBY sitting on 
the hood of a MZ with a TCS and obviously relaying messages from the line to 
ship. My reading of historical events of the Pacific Theater invasions show 
radio jeeps calling in strikes from the air, Naval and artillery fire.
