Dennis,

Someone may have sent you a direct but didn't see it on the list. The fe=
lt
lined holes (either 5 or 12, depending on which variant of the box you ha=
ve
[there were at least three variants]) are for spare tubes. The rectangul=
ar
recesses hold 12 tank coils. The sets of four holes hold 12 pair of
transmit & receive crystals (either FT-243 of CR-5/U) and the sets of thr=
ee
holes hold 12 antenna coils. Judging by dozens of examples that I have
seen, the standard put-up (or set) cover 12 individual frequencies betwee=
n
4035 and 5500 KC. Boxes were also supplied empty.

Incidentally, the BX-49-A differs significantly from the earlier BX-49,
which is much larger, has a sliding top, and held coil and crystal sets i=
n
the little green cardboard Galvin boxes.

>Have one of these, nice green wood box 3 X 13.5 X 4.25 (in., HWD), Signa=
l =

Corps with a 45 contract date. Has a metal clip arrangement on the front=
 =

holding 12 plastic tags with spaces to write in "Freq.," "Channel" and
"Bat. =

Date." Inside a dozen small plastic three-pin plug in coils, labeled
"Coil, =

Antenna, C-362, 4225 - 4475 K.C., 24K29023" (for example). Holes for a r=
ow

of what would appear to be smaller coils too, but all these are missing. =
 =

Also, pin holes for 24 FT-243 Xtals (presumably), and 12 slots along one
side =

to hold something else. =
