Hue,
You don't have to check your books - your memory is deadly accurate
At 19:28 GMT she said "...we received your signals but unable to get a minimum....."
The only caveat is that true communications never seemed to occur, according to a summary of the mission Commander Thompson stated:
"Earhart never answered Itaska's questions and never gave a position. Communications were never really established......Earhart
acknowledged receiving Itaska's signals at 0800 (ship's time). This formed the only case and was apparently for signals sent by
Itaska on 7500.......Earheart probably had receiver trouble......"
The Commander may have been trying to make it very apparent that no fault could be brought to his ship and crew, but it suggests a
major discontinuity in plans and preparation.
Sad ending to the story - but does bring out the fact that is still true today, the need to plan and test the communications
equipment - I have seen major field training exercises fail because the "uplink" could not be established due to improper
frequencies, mode and format - this as recently as 1988 -
Thanks for the exchange - I learn a vast amount of W W II and military equipment on this reflector - it is truly a great group.
