After a long talk with a former B-17 pilot with 35 combat missions over
Europe in WW2, here is what he said about the command and liaison radio
sets aboard. The pilot used the 274N radios for communications between
aircraft in the flight. The liaison radio was used for strike reports back
to England. This was on CW and was only usable from the radio
position. He also stated that they DID NOT have any VHF capability on the
B-17, so the idea that there was a B-17 over the channel with SCR-522's as
a repeater does not apply for bomber flights. It was not until late in the
war that the B-17 got the ART-13. Hope this puts everything to rest.
